Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 325 BCE. A black-glazed terracotta guttus (also guttos), a pouring vessel of a characteristically squat rounded form with a concave tiered foot, ribbed rounded walls, a single spout projecting upwards from one side, and a ring-shaped handle. The tondo is decorated with a low relief image of Attis, the Phrygian god of vegetation and the consort of Cybele in Greek mythology. He has sensitively-modeled facial features framed with drooping bangs capped with a Phrygian-style cap. A guttus like this would have been used by the ancients for holding precious oil to keep their lamps constantly full and burning bright. Size: 4.75" W x 3.7" H (12.1 cm x 9.4 cm).

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-William Froelich collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1970s
