Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A very fine polychrome terracotta female figure who stands with both hands on her ample hips. Her body is extensively decorated with tattoos or body paint featuring a plethora of black stylized geometric motifs and red-brown highlights. Her visage is mesmerizing with large almond-shaped eyes, a prominent turned up nose with openwork nostrils, pursed lips that rather than smiling connote a serious demeanor, sizeable earspools, and a caplike hat with geometric motifs adorning the back band. The figure is hollow and has perforations through the legs, abdomen, and neck that were presumably for attachment. Size: 4.375" W x 8.75" H (11.1 cm x 22.2 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-John A. Moir Jr. Trust of 2013; ex-Mirell Gallery, Coconut Grove, Florida, USA
