Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manteno culture, ca. 1000 CE. A fine necklace composed of nine pottery spindle whorl beads with spherical bodies, a carination along the midsection, and a pierced suspension hole. The exterior of each bead features incised abstract avian figures, and white pigment applied around the birds brings out their finer details. Six of the beads are presented on the strands of a red thread necklace with an adjustable loop on top, and the three largest beads hang from the middle as the central pendant. A wonderful and wearable example of ancient art combined with modern fashion! Size (necklace): 29.5" L (74.9 cm); (largest bead): 0.7" W x 0.625" H (1.8 cm x 1.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-HDE Enterprise/ Hank Johnson collection, Denver, Colorado before 2000
