Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, 206 BCE to 220 CE. This remarkable figurine, carved from a single piece of nephrite jade, depicts a graceful court dancer in a dynamic pose, her long sleeves flowing in sinuous motion. The robe is intricately detailed with incised scrolling cloud motifs that echo the elegant curve of her arms, while feline-like creatures with taotie faces adorn the lower part of her skirt. She stands atop an openwork base, beautifully decorated with mythical creatures, including bixie, dragons, and a phoenix (fenghuang) on her right side. Long, flowing sleeves were a popular fashion during the Han Dynasty, and their movement played a key role in court dances, a tradition that continues today in Chinese opera. This figure is not only a tribute to the refined artistry of the period but also a testament to the enduring cultural importance of dance in Chinese history.
