Description:

Near East / Central Asia, Turkey / Northwestern Iran, Marlik or Cheragh-Ali Teppe region, Amlash / Amardi culture, Iron Age period, ca. 1200 to 600 BCE. A tall red-ware vessel with a lengthy spout and handle set perpendicular to one side. What is most interesting on this piece is the handle placement- it was speculated whether this was intentional for a left dominant hand, and if using the right hand, the pitcher is best controlled by being held directly in front and tipping the spout forward. The length of the spout and handle position suggest ritualistic use, and this vessel may have been placed in a tomb as a grave good. Size: 8" L x 6" W x 8.5" H (20.3 cm x 15.2 cm x 21.6 cm)

Provenance: Private Greenwood Village, Colorado, USA collection, via inheritance; Leota Furlong Agett Persian Pottery collection, acquired in Tehran, Iran in the early 1960s
