Description:

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A forged iron socketed spearhead with a flattened and slender blade. The socketing shaft is conical, formed by hammering both sides of the lower blade until the peripheries nearly touch. This spearhead would be mounted upon a long wooden pole or shaft. The surface of the iron has developed a lovely russet patina over the ages. Vikings were skilled craftsmen and developed some of the best iron working methods in Europe during this time period. Iron was a highly valued material for its durability which made it highly suitable for weapon making. Size: 14.125" L x 1.375" W (35.9 cm x 3.5 cm)
