Description:

Ancient Northern Europe, Viking or Anglo-Saxon culture, ca. 7th to 9th century CE. A fine forged-iron axe head bearing a tall, crescent-shaped blade emanating from a cylindrical socketing shaft. Pairs of protruding points flank the sides of both the upper and lower shaft rims in front of a rectangular support bar on the verso, and the narrow neck is quite thick and could hold up to even the strongest of blows. The overall form of this axe head suggests it was made with ceremonial intentions, perhaps as a burial offering meant to accompany a great warrior into the afterlife. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 4.5" L x 7.25" H (11.4 cm x 18.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Starborn Creations, Sedona, Arizona, USA; ex-private German collection, purportedly found in Lithuania
