Lot 109
Russia, 18th century CE. A thick bronze amulet with a relief image of St George fighting the dragon. The story of St George, a Roman soldier of the Emperor Diocletian who mythically fought a dragon - a story brought back by the Crusaders - has been an enduring symbol in Christianity. In the Russian Orthodox Church, St George's fight against the dragon is also seen symbolically as a manifestation of the internal struggle against the evil among everyday lives. This particular amulet is finely detailed - the horse, for example, wears a cloth decorated with St George's cross, and the details of the dragon's scales and the saint's armor are clear. A border with Cyrillic letters at the top completes the design. A loop at the top is for suspension. Size: 2.45" W x 3" H (6.2 cm x 7.6 cm)
