Description:

Ancient Near East / Central Asia, Sasanian (Sassanian / Sassanid) Empire, ca. 2nd to 7th century CE. One of the most elaborate bronze oil lamps we have ever handled, expertly cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process in the form of a mother bird feeding her two chicks, with three spouts, one of a flared form with a beaded rim emerging from the back of the momma bird, and two in the form of the baby bird's bodies. The vessel is supported by a raised pedestal with a round base adorned by a beaded border that matches that of the central spout above. The details of this piece are amazing. Not only are the feathers meticulously delineated, but the poignant maternal exchange is rendered as the mother is holding a worm in her mouth to feed to her young. Three perforations (one through the spout on the mother bird's back and two through her wings). A beautiful piece with gorgeous green patina. Size: 6.25" L x 4.75" W x 5.375" H (15.9 cm x 12.1 cm x 13.7 cm)
