Marcian's rule was a time of recovery for the Eastern Roman Empire, a brief respite from violence and economic instability. However, his isolationist policies left the Western Roman Empire alone against attacks from barbarians, ultimately resulting in the Vandals' sack of Rome in 455 CE.
