Description:

South America, Northern Peru, Vicus culture, ca. 200 BCE to 600 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished redware pottery vessel of a double-chambered form with a bridge handle arching in-between. The front vessel depicts a standing male effigy wearing a distinctly non-native style of hat, holding a cup in one hand as well as a flute to his mouth, and peering outwards with ovoid eyes above incised cruciform patterns on the cheeks. The back chamber is shaped like a gourd, rests on a flared foot, and has a tapered spout on top. Size: 9" L x 8.625" H (22.9 cm x 21.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of the late Father Bader, University of St. Thomas, Houston, Texas, USA; exhibited in the University of St. Thomas Art Gallery, acquired prior to 2000
