Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay / Wari (Huari) Transition period, ca. 1000 CE. A fabulous anthropomorphic mummy mask carved from coffee-brown wood. The mask has a wide profile with puffy cheeks, thin lips above a petite chin, a prominent aquiline nose with delineated nostrils, and a tall forehead. A pair of recessed, diamond-shaped eyes display original white pigmentation and perhaps at one time held inlays of semi-precious stones or precious metals. A quartet of drilled attachment holes line the peripheries, and fine brown patina envelops the entire mask. Size: 5.9" W x 7.4" H (15 cm x 18.8 cm); 11.125" H (28.3 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Restoration to one large vertical fissure along obverse. Several additional smaller stable fissures. Minor nicks to obverse, reverse, and peripheries, with losses to original eye inlays, fading to original pigmentation, and light abrasions. Nice earthen deposits and great patina throughout.
