Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Maya culture, Usulutan style, proto-classic ca 100 BCE to 250 CE. An exceptionally fine and very rare pottery spouted jar from this little known culture of Mexico. Molded redware jar with exaggerated face of the god or deity Vuk'Ub Kak'Ix, wearing an avian maskette. The mask is comprised of a very long bird beak and large tripartite forehead ornamentation; flaring spout at rear with long neck and flared rim, applied red pigments throughout, much of which still remains, with negative resist paint on interior. Once covered in stucco, almost all of which is now gone. Size: 7" W x 8.25" H (17.8 cm x 21 cm)
