Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast of Mexico, Vera Cruz, Remojadas, ca. 600 to 900 CE. Pottery sonriente - literally translating to "smiling face." A young standing boy with arms extended upward at his sides, one hand open, the other holding a small rattle, possibly a gourd. He smiles widely exposing his teeth, his face with almond shaped eyes, the tall head cover featuring a pair of "mat" glyphs, which were used quite extensively during the Maya empire. His waist is covered with a short skirt featuring vertical pleats, bird heads at each side. Quite an impressive example! Size: 9.5" W x 13.5" H (24.1 cm x 34.3 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex Splendors of the World collection; ex H. J. Westermann Collection, Germany 1950s to 1960s
