Description:

Northern Italy, Etruria, ca. 3rd century BCE. A very fine mold-made terracotta votive with details reworked via a modeling tool in the form of a youthful female's head, her beautiful visage comprised of large almond-shaped eyes with nicely delineated lips and pupils, a gracefully arched brow line, an aquiline nose, full lips, smooth facial contours, petite ears, and a slender neck, all framed by long wavy tresses of hair, the hairstyle beneath a corona. A gorgeous example of Etruscan craftsmanship! Size: 4.5" L x 5.75" W x 9" H (11.4 cm x 14.6 cm x 22.9 cm).

Votive heads like this example were placed in temples as forms of requests or offerings to thank the gods. Sculptors used molds and stamp to create images of women and men. On particularly fine examples, such as this head, the artist refined features and details of the face and hair with a pointed tool prior to firing in the kiln. The bold enlivened eyes and wavy coiffure are hallmarks of the Etruscan style.
