Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A wonderful example of a redware plate, mold-made from ceramic and designed to be used at the table. The plate is striking in its simplicity, with a deep bowl and a wide, gently-sloping rim. It sits on a very low, flat foot with a slight ring bordering it. Roman redware items were made in vast factories, especially in the western part of the Empire, and shipped out far and wide. A plate like this could have graced an officer's table at Hadrian's Wall or been used in a villa in the Roman heartland of Italy. Size: 5.3" W x 1.9" H (13.5 cm x 4.8 cm)

  • Condition: Piece has tiny chips from rim, with very light encrustations on surface, especially around the rim. Bowl is slightly misshapen from the firing process, but would still have been completely functional.
