Description:

Central Italy, Etruria, ca. 550 BCE. This is an open burnished blackware vessel on a ring base with high twin strap handles at either side of the rim and a decorative band around the waist. Etruscan blackware pottery obtained its color from a "smother kiln" method, in which the fired clay came into contact with the carbonaceous smoke from the burning wood. This gives it an attractive, smoky, matte coloration. This vessel, a kantharos, would have been used for drinking. It may have had ceremonial use, to hold wine, but similarly may have been used in everyday practice. Size: 6-1/2" in diameter x 3-1/2" (16.5 cm x 8.9 cm).
