An impressive hand-carved and hand-painted mask - so elegant with its smooth, modeled facial contours, finely delineated facial features including teeth comprised of shell veneers, wavy coiffure adorned with repeated jewel-like circular ornaments, as well as a striking pair of attached, elongated earlobes. Mask making is a tradition that extends back to the 18th century in Sri Lanka where such visages have been created to portray characters from various folk tales as well as devil dances intended to banish disease causing demons.
