Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Mayan Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. Wow! An incredible, ornate ceramic standing figure of a lord dressed in an amazing array of ceremonial clothing: a massive banded headdress, a pectoral that projects outward from the body and hangs to the waist, a belt with two huge hanging spirals that almost reach the feet, star-shaped fringes that are attached to the shoulders, and a huge cape that stands as tall as his olla-shaped headdress. His face and arms are visible underneath all of this clothing, painted a dark red. Who is this figure? A ceremonial dancer, an elite lord, or a shaman? Certainly someone important in Mayan society! Size: 5.9" W x 6.05" H (15 cm x 15.4 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
