Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A hand-carved wooden sarcophagus base with a slender profile, perhaps intended for an infant or a small animal. The peripheries of the base feature 4 rectangular mortises intended to hold wooden tenons, and remains of original linen wrappings as well as dark bitumen are visible within the interior cavity. The back side features a columnar hieroglyphic inscription with a dedication to Osiris on top and an illegible name on the bottom. Size: 1.8" L x 6.25" W x 20.6" H (4.6 cm x 15.9 cm x 52.3 cm)
