Description:

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, ca. 1550 to 1070 BCE. A handsome dark brown steatite amulet of a seated baboon, his legs drawn up to his chest, his elbows resting against his thighs, and his long head with distinctive shape wonderfully detailed with incised lines creating the appearance of fur. Many animals had sacred symbolism for the Egyptians. The baboon, as a form of Thoth, is associated with the calculation of time and with the renewal of royal power, as well as writing, accounting, and other intellectual pursuits. This amulet would have belonged to an Egyptian who sought the god's intervention and guidance; the worn nature of the stone may be a testament to someone carrying it with them throughout their day. Size: 1.1" W x 1.7" H (2.8 cm x 4.3 cm)
