Egypt, Late Dynastic period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A hollow cast-bronze fragment of a votive sarcophagus with a slender rectangular body with open ends. The top is surmounted by the back half of a sinuous snake delineated in relief and presents incised 'scales' along the midsection as well as incised ringlets near the front end. Two petite suspension loops are integral with the sarcophagus. Votive sarcophagi like this example were filled the mummified remains of the animal represented on the top and were offered to specific deities as gifts so their prayers could be heard. Size: 4.25" L x 0.625" W (10.8 cm x 1.6 cm)
