Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A hand-carved wooden figure of a deity crouching upon bent legs. The deity wears a simple white-painted skirt, holds its bent arms tightly against the sides and thighs, and features a broad pectoral collar beneath the lappets of the tripartite wig. The abstract zoomorphic countenance is composed of a thick snout, black-outlined eyes, and a narrow mouth, features that are characteristic of baboon, hippopotamus, or certain feline deities. The figure is layered with white gesso and painted with vibrant yellow, black, and brown hues. Size: 1.1" W x 2.8" H (2.8 cm x 7.1 cm); 4.25" H (10.8 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Figure is adhered to base of display stand and cannot be removed. Minor nicks and abrasions to figure, with fading and chipping to original painted gesso, and light encrustations. Light earthen deposits and nice traces of original pigment throughout.
