Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, La Tolita (Tumaco) culture, ca. 600 BCE to 200 CE. An impressive pottery figure of a female shown bare-chested with bangles, anklets, necklaces, and face ornaments all rendered with meticulous detail. Seated with legs stretched before her, the ancient woman displays a bulky upper body with broad shoulders, petite breasts, and a rounded stomach. Both arms are bent at the elbows as she gestures to the viewer. Her stylized head presents slender, elongated eyes, a curved nose, and a slender smile, all beneath a towering coiffure or headdress. Dangling applied adornments decorate her prominent ears, as well as her nose, cheeks, and chin. Size: 4" W x 6" H (10.2 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Paul Haig collection, Rochester, Michigan, USA; ex-Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired prior to 2010
