Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque) culture, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE; Manabi region, Bahia culture, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE. A set of 7 pottery artifacts from ancient Peru. First is a Bahia standing whistle figure with incised striations. Next are 6 Jamacoaque creations: a seated nude male; a crouching figure with large nodules for the coiffure; a standing whistle figure; a petite seated figure with nice pigment; a fragmentary head of light orange color; and a larger fragmentary head with an avian headdress. Size of largest (seated figure): 2.625" L x 3.9" W x 4.8" H (6.7 cm x 9.9 cm x 12.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired before 1995

  • Condition: Repairs to largest figure with loss to proper left leg as shown. Two fragmentary heads are from larger compositions, otherwise the remaining artifacts are intact and very good. Whistle figures still create pleasing sounds when played.
