Description:

Classical World, Eastern Greece, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A solid bronze bust of Ares (Roman Mars), god of war, cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process and presenting a bearded visage crowned by a high crested Corinthian helmet and his upper torso dressed in a cloak pinned on the chest. Presented head on, his skillfully delineated face peers into the distance. The concave socket on its back suggests that it was intended as a decorative attachment. Size: 2.625" H (6.7 cm); 3.875" H (9.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Ares (Roman Mars) was the god of war - son to Zeus and Hera (Roman Jupiter and Juno) and one of the Twelve Olympians. His sister Athena (Roman Minerva) was the goddess of war. Whereas Ares/Mars traditionally represents the fiery, violent aspects of combat, his sister Athena/Minerva usually represents intellectual military strategy. Second in importance only to Zeus, Ares was highly regarded as the chief military god.
