Description:

East Asia, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. An East Asian bronze scholar's water dropper depicting a celestial winged chimera creature with a bifurcated tail, perhaps a nue or a bixie, as water droppers were oftentimes shaped in elaborate animorphic or mythological forms. Water droppers were devices used for calligraphy. A small amount of water was held in the container. A few drops were dropped onto an ink stone along with small particles ground from an inkstick. By mixing these together, a scholar could create ink for the art of writing. This example has a removable stopper on the creature's back for filling, a small bowl-like receptacle to drop small amounts of water onto the ink stone. The underside is signed. Size: 3.375" L x 1.5" W x 1.75" H (8.6 cm x 3.8 cm x 4.4 cm)
