Description:

Japan, Edo Period, ca. 18th century CE. This is a wood lacquered figure of a seated monk with his hands in a devotional post and with elaborately carved long flowing robes. His head is separately carved with distinct facial features and a bald head. The wooden details are clear. Edo (Tokugawa) Period Japan was a strictly controlled feudal society that by law had almost no contact with outside cultures; society became for the most part insular and inspired by older Japanese themes. Carvings from this period are often done from single pieces of wood. This monk sits atop a wood black mount. Size: 6" H (15.2 cm).
