Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A finely carved and hand-painted depiction of a dancing figure on a boat adorned with two outward facing Barong heads. Barong, the king of spirits and leader of the "hosts of the good" in Balinese mythology, is often characterized as a lion, but may also manifest as a boar, tiger, or dragon/serpent as we see in this example. Images of Barong were believed to prevent the intervention of evil spirits. A beautiful piece, nicely painted with a palette of red, blue, black, and white. Size: 12.75" W x 5.4" H (32.4 cm x 13.7 cm); 7.05" H (17.9 cm) on included custom stand.
