Description:

Southern Africa, Zimbabwe / South Africa, Zulu (Nguni) culture, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A knobkerrie, a bludgeon weapon crafted from dense wood, with the entire length of the shaft wrapped in a tightly woven mesh of brass wires. The bare wooden knob at the end is highly polished and smooth, featuring beautiful natural grain patterns, likely enhanced by the application of animal fat during initiations and other rituals. The brass accents are particularly striking in person - the wires are so finely woven that, at a glance, they appear to form a solid, cast-metal cylinder around the handle. While knobkerries were used for hunting and combat, finely embellished examples like this one were treasured ceremonial items, symbolizing leadership and proudly displayed in the home. Size: 26.5" L x 4.25" W (67.3 cm x 10.8 cm)
