Description:

Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska or Canada, Inuit, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A well preserved and heavily utilized adze axe comprised of a cedarwood handle and a slotted whale bone head for hafting a knapped stone blade. Holes drilled in the top of the bone and wood handle are threaded with dried sinew cordage and black strands that appear to be twined from hair. Pre-contact with Europeans, adzes just like this were traditionally made with stone or bone blades and served a variety of purposes such as chopping ice, digging, and shaping boats. Size: 5.75" L x 2.25" W x 12" H (14.6 cm x 5.7 cm x 30.5 cm)
