Description:

Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Beringian / Old Bering Sea Culture, Punuk & Thule stage to Inuit culture, ca. 500 to 1800 CE. Three ancient components of a hunting harpoon made from marine / land mammal bone and walrus ivory. The largest piece is probably part of the main shaft and drilled with a socket hole at the tip for inserting the double pointed foreshaft, and the barbed harpoon head fits onto the foreshaft. It is unknown if these pieces were found separately or together, the sinew cord was likely attached in recent times to demonstrate how these pieces fit together to form a hunting spear. Size of harpoon head assembled: 14.75" L x 1" W (37.5 cm x 2.5 cm); large shaft: 9.25" L x 1" W (23.5 cm x 2.5 cm)

  • Condition: Heavy patina. Exposure to elements, use, and age have weathered the surfaces with heavy pitting on the largest piece. Nice luster on the smaller pieces. Sinew is probably modern and attached to keep the pieces together and demonstrate their function.
