Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Guangala, 100 to 800 CE. This is a androgynous redware figure with painted red decorations that may indicate tattooing or scarification. The figure has breasts and a distended belly that suggests pregnancy, but it also has male genitalia. Figures who are both male and female are often shamans or hold some kind of sacred power in society. This figure has a gold nose ring and two jadeite earrings. The Guangala culture produced decorative, polychrome ceramics like this one during a time of great social and economic change in the Northern Andean region. At the start of the period, the Guangala culture was relatively egalitarian, but increasing trade interactions with nearby cultures led to the development of social heirarchies. The Guangala produced no large scale monuments, so their exquisite and detailed pottery is our most lasting record of their lives. Size: 6" W x 13-1/2" H. Provenance: Ex-Splendors of the World Gallery All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #110360
