Canada, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Wakwa_ka_'wakw / Kwakiutl indigenous First Nation's people, ca. 1880 to 1910 CE. An early and quite interesting argillite totem from coastal Vancouver Island. Carved in three registers with wolf sitting upon top of whale. Wolf shown with stippled fur and long forelegs extended. Whale with central blow-hole upon his back, flippers tucked to his side with wide set eyes with inlaid shell. He is sitting upon a human figure, crouched arms extended showing the weight he is holding. The reverse is left reserved. Size: 2" W x 8" H (5.1 cm x 20.3 cm)
