Description:

Ancient Near East, early Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 7th century CE. A cast-bronze bread stamp with a rectangular body, a ring handle, and a roundel atop the handle which is stamped with a faded image of perhaps a scorpion or a dolphin. The solid stamp face bears 16 inscribed Greek letters which, though untranslated, likely depict the name of the specific bakery or baker. Covered in layers of matte green and brown patina, this is a fabulous example of Byzantine craftsmanship! Size: 2.75" W x 1.2" H (7 cm x 3 cm).
