Description:

Ancient Near East, Judeo-Aramaic, ca. 6th to 8th century CE. A lovely Judeo-Aramaic terracotta bowl with fine black lines of inscription spiraling around the interior. Bowls like this were traditionally buried face down under houses to catch demons and thus protect the house; they were also known as incantation bowls or demon bowls. Bowls like this example were widely used in the ancient Near East; for example, nearly every house excavated in the Jewish-Iraqi settlement of Nippur had one. Size: 6.3" W x 2.25" H (16 cm x 5.7 cm).
