Description:

Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A simple thurible, a cast bronze censer suspended from three bronze chains. Each chain is composed of several links of bronze chain below a long bronze wire; the three chains meet at a hammered, two-part bronze cross with a long bronze hook at its top for suspension. The body of the vessel is cylindrical, with three short legs. The body has incised lines around its exterior surface and bears signs of use on its interior. The piece once had a lid with holes through it to allow incense to escape. Made for use in religious ceremonies. Size with chains extended: 3.45" W x 16.05" H (8.8 cm x 40.8 cm)

  • Condition: Rich dark green patina overall. Nice preservation of form, with slight bending to some of the hooks. Signs of use on interior of bowl as well as some casting flaws.
