Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A beautiful handheld prayer wheel with a cylindrical, hammered bronze body and a wooden handle; the drum-like body has an attached chain with a hard, polygonal body on its end for making sound when rotated. Fine repousse motifs encircle the body in two bands, each containing mythical faces, symbols of plenty, floral motifs, and repeated characters representing a mantra. Spinning the wheel is believed to have the same effect as chanting the prayer. Size: 3.15" W x 10.4" H (8 cm x 26.4 cm)

#125008

  • Condition: Rich patina on all surfaces. The top presumably once had something that held the wheel in place that is now lost. The chain holding the bronze piece for playing it is a modern replacement. The rest is in nice condition with well-preserved motifs.
