Description:

Native American, Western United States, Plains Tribes, Sioux, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful, beaded leather purse with a Bakelite closure and cotton lining. The purse body is lane (lazy) stitched with hundreds of sky-blue glass seed beads around white, pink, green, and metallic silver beads arranged in a geometric motif that is different on both sides. The lower corners contain red and white beaded tassels, and the leather handle strap is accented with beading along the upper half as well. The leather and cotton lining are sewn to a Bakelite closure, a latch arm articulates downward forming a tight clasp. Western Sioux women generally used geometric motifs and symbols while eastern tribes made organic floral designs. Size (w/ handle): 11.5" L x 7" W (29.2 cm x 17.8 cm)
