Description:

Native American, Southwest United States, Acoma, ca. mid-20th century CE. A gorgeous pottery vessel presenting an attractive polychrome decorative program of characteristically stylized geometric and phytomorphic motifs in chocolate brown and deep orange on a beige ground. The design itself is boldly painted on the beige slip, almost like paint on canvas, nicely complementing the minimalist form of the apple-shaped body and raised rim. Acoma potters would ultimately embrace horror vacui (literally, "the fear of empty space") in their designs, which was not only commercially successful - complexity equals value is a simple enough formula - but also aesthetically distinct from the work that preceded it, as evidenced in this beautiful vessel. Size: 11.5" Diameter x 9.7" H (29.2 cm x 24.6 cm)

Provenance: private S.S. collection, Los Angeles, California, USA
