Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Mt. Hagen region, ca. 1st quarter 20th century CE. A nice example of a Mt. Hagen axe, with a heavy iron blade, sharp on its curved end. The blade is attached to a long, thin wood handle by wrapped rattan. The handle terminates in an "L"-shaped base with further inlaid rattan near the top and a zoomorphic, lizard-like carved wood shape on the short arm of the "L". Size: 8" L x 3" W x 24" H (20.3 cm x 7.6 cm x 61 cm)
