Description:

North America, Pacific Northwest Coast, ca. early 20th century CE. A fine pair of snowshoes with frames formed from singular bent wooden slats. Two slender horizontal panels are fitted into thin mortises within the interior, and each shoe is bound with lengthy strands of sinew. The sinew strands wrap around much of the midsection to keep the form, and tufts of red-and-beige thread are used as knots along the exterior. Foot straps were at one time attached to the largest woven sinew supports and would have enabled the wearer to effortlessly stay atop light snow by expanding the surface area of each step. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 37.375" L x 11.6" W (94.9 cm x 29.5 cm).
