Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast (USA and Canada), Kwakiutl peoples, ca. 1930s CE. A hand-carved wooden totem pole depicting a wide-winged bat standing atop a bear cub's head, who in turn is standing atop an adult bear's head. Both bears have bent limbs and blocky heads painted in black, with black-and-red ringed eyes, the adult presenting flared nostrils and bared teeth in an aggressive manner while the cub stares skyward with a pensive expression. The bat has its feet tucked beneath its angular body, with a painted face, perky ears, and a single dual-ended wing secured to the verso with a small metal pin. Situated atop a square wooden platform, this is a beautiful example of totemic zoomorphic artistry! Size: 16" H (40.6 cm); 16.75" H (42.5 cm) on included stand.
