Native American Indian, Northwest United States, Washington state, Makah, ca. 1910 CE. Finely twined round basket with lid comprised of cedar bark, bear grass, and aniline dyes. The exterior walls are adorned with overlay decoration depicting a bird in brown and red hues, two identical animals in red, and a symbol that includes a cross in red on a natural ground. Beneath are striations of acorn brown that match those of the sides of the lid above. The top of the lid is decorated with an abstract swirling design in red, orange, and taupe on the same natural ground. The bottom of the vessel is woven with raffia of the same vintage. Size: 6" in diameter x 3.25" H (15.2 cm x 8.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Morgan Collection, Santa Monica, CA, acquired in 1967.
