Oceania, New Zealand, Maori culture, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A fantastically carved dark wood inkwell complete with antique glass ink jar. On either side of the jar and in front of it are dramatic faces, the flanking pair with distended tongues and all with inlaid paua (abalone) eyes. Size: 5.3" L x 8.9" W x 2.5" H (13.5 cm x 22.6 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Wear to black paint on the surface of the inkwell. Light encrustation in the lower profile areas and signs of wear commensurate with age on the surface, but overall the piece is in very nice condition.
