A gorgeous carved wooden bowl with a sweeping form, a deep central cavity that is smoothed to a high sheen, and elaborately incised zoomorphic swirling motifs inlaid with seventeen discs of abalone. The bowl stands on a small foot at its center. The Maori are renowned for their wood carving, which often takes on fascinating, sinuous forms, like this bowl. Size: 15.2" L x 6.1" W x 2.45" H (38.6 cm x 15.5 cm x 6.2 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
