Description:

West Africa, Liberia, Dan peoples, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask known as a gunyeya (also gunye ge, literally "face mask") of a long, ovoid form. The mask features wide eye holes with thinly incised brows above, a broad triangular nose, full lips with two perforations flanking the philtrum, and a tapered chin, all beneath a bulging forehead. Three pairs of perforations are situated on the top periphery and just behind the temples, and the carved-out verso is ready for wear. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only.
