Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest (USA and Canada), Alaska, Inuit, ca. early 20th century CE. A slender pair of snow goggles, carved from the bone of a caribou or another native ungulate, worn to protect one from snow blindness. Carved to fit the wearer's face, these goggles have horizontal slits that are quite narrow so that only some light will filter through the slits. The slits are this narrow in order to improve the wearer's visual acuity by reducing the glare. Three incised vertical lines are carved over each slit, with a scalloped upper ridge for gripping, and a perforation on either end allows for suspension on the wearer's head. A nice, early example. Custom, museum-quality display stand included. Size: 6" W x 1.2" H (15.2 cm x 3 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) on included custom stand.
