Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sulawesi Island, Toraja people, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. The exterior surfaces are lined with dozens of rectangular ox bone mail panels for protection, and four square buttons are cinched close with a pair of twisted straps and a single spire mollusk pendant. Two medium and two large layered roundels accentuate the front of the shoulder straps and chest panels and are meant as magical talismans for warding against enemy attacks and evil spells sent forth by spellcasters.
