Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A fine example of a personal knife known as a badek (also badik) that is also called a butterfly knife due to is petite, slender size. The hand-carved wooden handle has a dramatically curved profile with an abstract 'beak' on the end, and the copper-nickel spacer cap is adorned with a thin band of raised cord patterning. The forged-steel blade exhibits a straight profile with a thick spine, a sharpened edge, and strips of lighter nickel hammered into the graining pattern. The wooden sheath has a protruding guard protector, a thin blade housing, and copper-nickel panels lining the exterior; the end cap is composed of 46% silver. Size (w/ sheath): 3" W x 9" H (7.6 cm x 22.9 cm); (length of blade): 6.3" L (16 cm); quality of silver: 46%.
